Tennis is a popular sport with a thriving community in Scottsdale and the Phoenix area. Here are some key points about tennis in The Valley of the Sun:
Climate: We play all year, folks. Even in the summer when it's 110 degrees? Well, not in the heat of the day, but definitely in the mornings and in the evenings! If you've played tennis, you know it can be a little bit addictive, and the heat won't stop us! Our warm (almost always sunny) weather is perfect for tennis enthusiasts!
Facilities: The Valley is home to numerous tennis facilities, ranging from public parks with courts, community HOA tennis courts, and private clubs with extensive amenities. We love playing at the DC Ranch Village and are thrilled for the opportunity to play at The Phoenician when our team is matched up there. Some additional well-known tennis facilities include the Phoenix Tennis Center, Scottsdale Ranch Park, and private clubs like the Phoenix Country Club. In Scottsdale, Indian School Park and Tennis Center offers affordable courts and lessons for all!
Tournaments: In October, the USTA Southwest Hard Courts Championships are held at the Phoenix Tennis Center. Registration closes this Sunday, so sign up today! Additionally, the Phoenix area hosts various local and regional tennis tournaments throughout the year. These events cater to players of all skill levels, from casual enthusiasts to competitive players looking for more serious competition. In the spring, the Arizona Tennis Classic is ATP Tour’s elite “Challenger 175” category. This newly created classification boasts only a handful of events worldwide and the Arizona Tennis Classic will stand alone as the only one in the United States. ASU tennis matches are free for all during the regular season. Attending is a great way to get valuable signatures from the up and coming stars! Check out local club and charity tournaments over the weekend too!
Leagues and Organizations: There are several tennis leagues and organizations in the Phoenix area that provide opportunities for players to compete in organized leagues, social events, and tournaments. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has a strong presence in the region, offering leagues for players of all ages and skill levels, and Universal Tennis Rating connects players all levels for level-based matches you can schedule on your own time!
Coaching and Lessons: Phoenix has a thriving community of tennis coaches and instructors who offer lessons for players of all levels. These coaches often work at local clubs or have their own private coaching businesses. If you're looking for a coach, we know several who we highly recommend!
Community Events: Many parks and clubs in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area host community events, including social mixers, round-robin tournaments, and charity fundraisers. These events provide opportunities for players to meet and connect with others in the tennis community. This is one of our favorite parts about tennis! The people who play are friendly, fun and have become some of our best friends.
Junior Tennis: Our very own Desert Mountain Girls Tennis Team WON the Division I state championships this past May 2023. I recall wishing we had more spectators at our matches in high school, so consider attending a high school match when you have time. The Phoenix area has a vibrant junior tennis scene, with many programs and coaches dedicated to developing young talent. This includes both recreational programs for beginners and competitive programs for aspiring young athletes.
Equipment and Retailers: All About Tennis and A-Z Tennis are our locally owned Scottsdale tennis specialty shops. DC Ranch Village tennis center offers demo rackets, clothing, and other up to the minute tennis accessories for sale at reasonable prices. Given that our daughter recently worked for Viori, we are usually decked out in their gear. but we also appreciate the quality of a LuluLemon tennis skirt and prefer Asics tennis shoes. ALI by Alixandra Collections offers a wide selection of Lucky in Love women's tennis apparel.
Remember that availability and offerings may change over time, so it's always a good idea to check with local resources or organizations for the most up-to-date information on tennis in the Phoenix area.
