When it comes to holiday destinations, the Grand Canyon may not be the first place that comes to mind. However, we believe it is one of the best places to create unforgettable Christmas memories. We traveled there this past year during the holidays, and visiting the Grand Canyon during a quiet time of year was truly special.
During the winter months, the Grand Canyon transforms into a breathtaking masterpiece. The sight of snow-covered stone layered deep into the canyon will give you a newfound appreciation for this magical place. We chose to spend a day walking along the rim, we enjoyed meals at El Tovar. We hope one day to embark on a winter hike to the Colorado River. If you're planning to hike, you will need crampons for your hiking boots, as the trails are icy and steep!
Here are some of the reasons to visit the Grand Canyon during the winter months:
Fewer visitors arrive at the Grand Canyon during the holiday season, allowing visitors to enjoy the park in a more peaceful and intimate setting.
If you're ready for some winter weather, visiting The Grand Canyon during winter is a refreshing change for residents of the Valley of the Sun. The cool temperatures make exploring the park much more comfortable than it is during the summer. Bring your puffy coat and winter boots!
Winter conditions often create cloud inversions, where clouds rest low or even inside the canyon, resulting in a surreal and awe-inspiring sight. Sunrises from the South Rim are especially breathtaking when accompanied by a snowy landscape.
Although the North Rim is inaccessible by road during winter, it can be reached by hiking from the South Rim. We've heard it's a winter wonderland at this time of the year!
The Polar Express train from Williams to the Grand Canyon is an Arizona classic! Clad in pajamas, sipping hot cocoa, and enjoying cookies, you'll feel the holiday spirit as you journey to Santa's workshop.
Consider staying at the historic El Tovar Hotel, located on the rim of the Grand Canyon. This elegant hotel offers a luxurious and historic holiday atmosphere and provides delicious meals!
For the ultimate adventure, hike into the Canyon and stay overnight at Phantom Ranch or Bright Angel Campground. Get a permit and make reservations in advance. If you're unable to secure a permit, keep calling to check for canceled reservations. Remember to pack warm clothing, crampons for your hiking boots, and be prepared for snowy and icy conditions.
As you plan your holiday trip to the Grand Canyon, make sure to stay informed about any alerts, check weather and road conditions, and exercise caution while hiking on potentially icy or muddy trails. It's also essential to travel with a Winter Emergency Kit, including items such as a windshield scraper and fluid, flashlights, food and water, blankets, tow chain or rope, tire chains, and a shovel.
Whether there's a blanket of snow or not, the Grand Canyon's appearance changes depending on the weather, time of day, and year. This ever-changing landscape is just one of the reasons why the Grand Canyon keeps drawing visitors back time and time again.
