On Friday, February 22, 2019, residents of North Scottsdale, Carefree and Cave Creek woke up to an exciting treat. Snow! I noticed snow on the McDowell Mountains at the Lost Dog and Sunrise Trailheads as I drove my son to school at 7:00 am. Luckily, I had my camera with me and an extra hour to spare.
The gentleman I met on the trail that morning noted, "Isn't it amazing how the Earth still delights us?" Indeed. I could barely speak for my excitement! on the way to Sunrise Peak, I found California Poppy and Lupine Flowers shivering, hoping for afternoon sun.
The Scottsdale Police closed Tom's Thumb, Brown's Ranch, Granite Mountain and Fraesefield Trailheads to protect the Preserve from the many enthusiastic citizens eager to experience the snow. Unfortunately, some showed up to ski, snowboard and snowshoe. While these activities are wonderful, they are not allowed by the Preserve ordinance.
